RCHRS publishes the fourth annual report on Academic Freedoms in the Palestinian Territories

The Ramallah Center for Human Rights studies (RCHRS) published the fourth annual report on Academic Freedoms in the Palestinian Authority Territories that covers the year 2009.

This publication reflects the RCHRS' general policy of defending academic freedoms and of monitoring all violations of educational rights in the Palestinian  territories. This report deals exclusively with the state of academic freedom in Palestinian universities.

It aims at giving an overview of the internal Palestinian situation whilst taking the exacerbating effect of Israeli occupation crimes into consideration.

The report discusses the violations of and the crimes committed against educational rights by the Israeli occupation forces during the war on Gaza. The report indicates that 164 students and 12 teachers were killed as well as 454 and 5 wounded, respectively. In addition, it illustrates the enormous financial and physical damages inflicted upon educational institutions during the offensive.

Accounting for the internal violations of academic freedoms and educational rights, the report demonstrates that the Palestinian internal political divide continues to bear a negative impact on the work of the students' movements in universities. Moreover, the report discusses the students' strikes that occurred in the West Bank and in some of the universities in the Gaza Strip.

Finally, the report concludes with two main recommendations; firstly, it calls upon international civil society organizations to pressure Israel into respecting  educational rights and academic freedoms and, secondly, it stresses the importance of safeguarding the independence of Palestinian universities by separating them from all internal political disruptions.
